Geophysical Research Letters Rain evaporation andmoist patches in tropical boundary layers

چکیده
Moist patches are areas in the subcloud layer characterized by a positive water vapor anomaly compared to the environment and are considered important in triggering new convective cells. A correct understanding of the origin of the water vapor in these patches is, thus, essential to improving existing convective parameterizations. Recent studies have addressed this problem and have shown that contrary to what was previously thought, the main source of water vapor in moist patches are surface latent heat fluxes, instead of rain evaporation. This manuscript offers a different perspective to the topic, focusing on the origin only of the water vapor that makes moist patches anomalously moist when compared to the environment. It is found that near the surface, rain evaporation contributes half as much as latent heat fluxes, implying that a parameterization of the thermodynamic forcing should be more sensitive to environmental variables, like relative humidity, than recently suggested.

A Lagrangian Study of Precipitation-Driven Downdrafts*
Precipitation-driven downdrafts are an important component of deep convective systems. They stabilize the atmosphere by injecting relatively cold and dry air into the boundary layer. They have also been invoked as responsible for balancing surface latent and sensible heat fluxes in the heat and moisture budget of tropical boundary layers. This study is focused on precipitation-driven downdrafts...
متن کاملRain structure transfer using an exemplar rain image for synthetic rain image generation
This letter proposes a simple method of transferring rain structures of a given exemplar image (rain image) into a target image (non‐rain image). Given the exemplar rain image and its corresponding masked rain image, rain patches including real‐life rain structures are extracted randomly, and then residual rain patches are obtained by subtracting those rain patches from their mean patches. This study examines the significance of aerosol serving as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in modulating strengths of tropical maritime convection. Through a Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Couple Ocean̶Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE) case study using a cloud-resolving model (the Goddard Cumulus Ensemble Model with a horizontal mesh interval of 750 m) and a detailed spectral bin mic...
متن کاملHydrological Processes in a Humid Tropical Rain Forest: a Combined Experimental and Modelling Approach
Evaporation losses from a watertight 6.34 ha rain forest catchment under wet maritime tropical conditions in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, were determined using complementary hydrological and micrometeorological techniques during 1996 and 1997. At 6.6 mm d−1 for 1996 and 6.0 mm d−1 for 1997, the average evapotranspiration (ET ) of the forest is exceptionally high. Rainfall inte...
متن کاملDrivers of rain-forest boundary dynamics in Kakadu National Park, northern Australia: a eld assessment
Understanding the causes of savanna–forest dynamics is vital as small but widespread changes in the extent of tropical forests can have major impacts on global climate, biodiversity and human well-being. Comparison of aerial photographs for 50 rain-forest patches in Kakadu National Park had previously revealed a landscape-wide monotonic expansion of rain-forest boundaries between 1964 and 2004....
